So why choose organic products? Certified organic products (not those that are just labelled natural) usually taste better and are more nutritious; they also greatly reduce our exposure to pesticides, and genetically modified foods such as soy and corn. A high percentage of corn and soy foods as well as other foods are modified by using glyphosates (round-up ready seeds) and other chemicals or bacteria.
There are conflicting studies on the nutritional facts but as consumers we should always look at who is funding the studies and how detailed and widespread the information is. For example an extensive study from Newcastle University in the UK has verified that organic foods have a much higher content of antioxidants. The UK study also indicated other nutritional facts about organic food, and clarified many errors in the Stanford University study which stated there was little nutritional benefit to eating organic foods.
Organic farming does not deplete our soil of minerals and healthy bacteria which makes it better for plants, animals and humans. It also helps to reduce our carbon footprint.
The Canadian organic sector has launched a new campaign to THINK BEFORE YOU EAT, encouraging us to think about what we eat, how it is grown, where it comes from and how nutritious it is. For more information on this visit their website at http://thinkcanadaorganic.ca/.
